EXPLORE MEXICO

SIX EXCELLENT REASONS TO TRAVEL TO COZUMEL:

1We have picked this destination specifically because it not only offers great diving for the experienced diver, but also excellent learning conditions for those who don't dive, but want to learn or are interested in diving in warm, clear, blue water.

2The Scuba Club Cozumel (formerly Galapago Inn) offers a low-keyed, laid back, relaxing atmosphere. The Club is located near the middle of the island a short walk or taxi ride (1 mile) to downtown San Miguel (ferry pier).

The ocean side of the Club is composed of 'ironshore', hard uneven sculptured, limestone that drops to 15 feet for an interesting shallow wall dive and breath taking snorkeling. This area is full of crevices and small caves, which offers great opportunities for macro photography and videography. An underwater light is highly recommended to peer back into these holes and openings.

Entry into the water is possible from either one of the piers and a very easy exit is found through a tunnel, that leads to a waist deep saltwater pool and up a short staircase to the deck. Night diving here, on this wall, will produce unique and memorable creature encounters. Additional dives can be made from the shore, take a swim in the pool, or read a dive magazine while resting in a hammock under a thatched roof.

Discover Other Diving Tours!

The Club is located on the waterfront of the Caribbean sea. There are 60 rooms, spaced out over a three storied Spanish-Colonial building, built by divers for divers. Window air-conditioners, ceiling fans and a small refrigerator are in each room. No TV's or phones in the rooms. The rooms are spacious and comfortable with drying racks for drying suits on each terrace. A few rooms have been remodeled to accommodate handicapped folks.

The rooms have access to a freshwater swimming pool, restaurant, bar and an in-house dive center. The rooms are finished in tile and stucco with a real feel of Mexican hertiage. There is a small annex across the street, with a gift shop and convenience store, as well as the retail dive shop.

The central building houses the "Fat Grouper" restaurant. Downstairs is open to the sea breeze and is used for a buffet style breakfast and sit down lunch with a bar and two TV monitors to review the day's videos just taken by the divers. At night, upstairs, the main dining room is air conditioned.

The dining room has an ocean view for watching spectacular sunsets and relaxing while eating. Every evening there is a different selection of entrees, comprising red meat, poultry and seafood, with a taste of cuisine from the Yucatan region. Vegetarian meals and special diets are prepared on advanced notice.

3Deeply etched in the face of these world famous off-shore walls and coral reefs are winding canyons, deep ravines, large crevices, monstrous overhangs and undulating tunnels.

4Water explodes with all types of life making Cozumel one of the top five scuba diving destinations in the western hemisphere.

5Diving days will include complimentary beverages aboard the dive vessel and opportunities for wonderful boat diving and drift diving experiences.

6Non-diving activities include island exploration, mainland exploration, beach combing, mopeding, shopping, dining, tanning, relaxing, discovering scuba diving, beach and/or boat snorkeling.

COZUMEL 98

COZUMEL is an island south and east of the Yucatan Peninsula that can be visited many times - this is why it is "Numero Uno" in the western hemisphere. The beaches are beautiful, the diving is great, the quaint city of San Miguel is full of low-keyed adventure, shopping and fun.

ITINERARY: 8 DAY PROGRAM

DAY 1: Fly to Cozumel, transfer to Club. Possible scuba and/or snorkeling refresher course. Complete two open water dives toward your PADI open water certification class with the proper signed PADI referral and medical forms. Non-divers opportunity to try scuba diving. Cozumel is interesting, fun and easy to dive from shore or from a boat.

DAYS 2,3,4,6,7: Each morning we will board our dive boats at the pier and head out for a standard (8:15 am to 1 pm) day of diving to a variety of beautiful sites. Although we will dive well within the decompression limits, many dropoffs fall vertically 2000-3000 feet. You can expect water temperatures of 80 to 84 degrees, visibility of 90 to 150 feet and topside temperatures of 80 to 85 degrees. Each diving day will include complimentary beverages aboard the dive vessel. Non-divers will have the chance to go snorkeling, beach combing, tanning or island exploring. Non-Divers can pay to snorkle from the boats.

CHANKANAB LAGOON- An ideal dive and prime spot for viewing small tropical fish. For Divers and Non Divers alike.

PALANCAR REEF- Top of this massive wall starts in 50 feet and consists of winding canyons, deep ravines, narrow crevices, a labyrinth of passageways, tunnels and caves. A stunning reef with visibility of between 150-250 feet. A well deserved, world-wide reputation.

COLUMBIA REEF- An impressive vertical wall with huge canyons, ravines and tall pinnacles. Large groupers, giant turtles, and big jacks frequent the reef. Visibility runs to 250 feet.

COLUMBIA SHALLOWS- This is Phil's most favorite shallow reef dive.

SANTA ROSA WALL- Starting at 70 feet, the wall drops straight away into the deep. A super current dive along the wall to observe large schools of jack, an occasional shark, elegant tube sponges, and an impressive variety of large Queen and French angelfishes.

DAY 5: We have no scheduled boat diving, allowing all of you to fully explore the island, Mayan ruins (Tulum or Chichen-Itza is available), beaches and shopping, etc. Non Divers may have an opportunity to try scuba diving, if you wish.

DAY 8: Morning free for last minute shopping, packing, tanning, relaxing and to say good bye to our newly found friends. Fly Cozumel to Boise or to your home. We will have waited at least 24 hours since our last dive before we fly.

VERY SPECIAL VALUE: Ocean Reef Ecology Diving Specialty is included. Two dives are required under the supervision of the instructor. Other specialties will be available at a reasonable cost, see attached list of prices.

These include: enriched air nitrox, underwater photography and advanced underwater photography, underwater video, research diving, boat diving, wreck diving, deep, current, search and recovery, night and hunting and collecting.

Open water diver, advanced, rescue, divemaster and assistant instructor continuing education certifications will be offered at a very reasonable cost. Please sign up with your registration in order for the correct books and materials to be available on site in Cozumel.
